PETREL : a small black-and-white sea
bird with long, pointed wings. Petrels breed especially
on ocean islands and fly far out to sea, often following
ships. There are various kinds. The smaller kind are also
called Mother Carey's chickens. Supposedly a diminutive
of Saint Peter, from his walking on the sea.
